Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an event brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.

This list is in no particular order (well, except for #1), and I only allowed myself one character per book/series.

1. Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

While Cedric was not the first character in the Harry Potter books to win me over (that honor goes to, of course, Harry himself), he had me after that Quidditch game in Book 3 and I was a mess after his death. I really wish we could have gotten to know him more before that happened, but I am happy with what we do know about him – solely from the books, not J.K. Rowling’s interviews or Pottermore – and he has the distinction of being my HP boyfriend (though that would take too long to explain here).

2. Edmund Pevensie from Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

I always had a week spot for Edmund from the very beginning of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe even when he was acting selfish and lying, and I’m not entirely sure why. I was so, so happy when he redeemed himself, and I felt the first two movies (I never saw the third, unfortunately) captured his growth really well. Like Cedric, he has the distinction of being one of my fictional boyfriends. One of my friends laid claim to Peter while we were watching the second movie together and I remember being so relieved she didn’t even consider choosing Edmund!

3. Connall Maccon from Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger

This one is probably a no-brainer after all my posts featuring Gail Carriger’s wonderful books. I just love his combination of sensitivity and bullheadedness, and he had me hooked even before his first kiss with Alexia. But what completely sold the deal was that wonderful, wonderful scene in Soulless that will forever be a favorite. Not going to say anything else because of spoilers!

4. Will Parry from His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

There is so much I could say about Will and why I love him, that I’m simply going to list a few things I love about him, rather than try and keep myself from rambling and squee-ing. His loyalty. His courage. His strength. His… JUST EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM. Yeah, sorry, I felt myself starting to break down and start rambling, so I had to stop myself. Love. Him.

5. Sam Woodruff from Sweet Valley High by Francine Pascal

Most people I know would probably expect me to choose Todd Wilkins from any of the Sweet Valley series, and while I do adore him in every series except for Senior Year (and the last few books of SVH), Sam Woodruff surpasses him so much whenever I think of SVH. He was such a wonderful character, a great boyfriend for Jessica, and when his fate was revealed after the events of A Night to Remember, I was positively heartbroken!

6. Hiram “Strat” Stratton from Time Travelers by Caroline B. Cooney

Oh my gosh, I don’t even know where to begin with Strat. I just loved him from the get-go and the synopsis for the second book in the quartet damn near broke my heart. I really need to reread those books at some point….

7. Almanzo Wilder from Little House by Laura Ingalls Wilder

While I have yet to read about Almanzo’s life in Farm Boy, I positively loved him in These Happy Golden Years and The First Four Years. Those courting scenes between him and Laura especially, oh my god, my little fourth grader heart could barely contain itself!

8. Jed Reston from Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix

I remember not being able to decide how I felt about Jed in the beginning of the book, but as time went by and things between Ella and Prince Charming were not working out while Jed was there for her, I was silently yelling at Ella for being so stupid and not leaving Charming for Jed. I can’t remember exactly how old I was when I read it, but at the time it was one of the worst waits I’ve ever had for a main character to get a clue!

9. Prince Charmont “Char” from Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

I cannot even begin to describe how much I love Char. Just, the way he treated Ella, and the things he did for her made me swoon. And when he thought Ella didn’t love him… I was a mess, an absolute mess.

10. Leo Valdez from The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Choosing just one character from the Percy Jackson and The Heroes of Olympus series was so, so difficult. I just kept going back and forth between Percy and Leo, trying to decide who was my favorite of the two. I finally decided on Leo because, although Percy is wonderful (especially with Annabeth!), I remember connecting with Leo so much more quickly in The Lost Hero than I did with Percy in The Lightning Thief, his growth over the four released books has been amazing, and I’m really, really hoping he doesn’t die in Blood of Olympus! Well, I don’t want anyone to die, but out of the seven heroes I don’t know how I would be able to handle him, Percy, and/or Annabeth dying.
